On 10 August 2009, the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the United Nations, partnered with Hiroshima City, Nagasaki City, and Semey City, in cooperation with Hiroshima International Council for Medical Care of the Radiation-Exposed (HICARE), opened the exhibition titled “Against Nuclear Arms” in the Visitor’s Lobby of the United Nations Headquarters.
The exhibition showcased informative panels with archival photos of two tragic experiences; the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in 1945 and its aftermath, and the nuclear testing carried out in Kazakhstan during 1949-1989, and the effects on the surrounding people and environment. It also includes a presentation from HICARE on the promotion of international cooperation with regards to health care for the radiation-exposed.
The Permanent Representative of Japan, H.E. Yukio Takasu, presented opening remarks touching on the cooperation between Japan and Kazakhstan, and the importance that the memory of the documented tragedies never be forgotten. Ambassador Takasu also outlined Japan’s efforts towards nuclear disarmament, including Foreign Minister Nakasone’s “Conditions toward Zero – 11 Benchmarks for Global Nuclear Disarmament” and the signature and ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
“Against Nuclear Arms” will be displayed in the UN Visitor’s Lobby from 10 August to 30 September 2009.
